to the Far East at any rate for some time to come, I have encouraged Miss Volkova to apply for the visa as mentioned.

END

It is to be noted that Miss Volkova is a person well- known to, and of excellent repute with the Authorities in Hong-Kong. She has, in the capacity of her profession, a teacher of ballet, given productions on behalf of charity, to which the recent Governor, Sir William Peel has lent his patronage.

Miss Volkova has a perfect command of the English language, written and spoken, and a wide circle of friends of British nationality both in Hong-Kong and in England who would, I feel sure, be willing to recommend her integrity and character.

I have personally known Miss Volkova during four years and have during this period come to form for her an attachment I would not willingly sacrifice. It is therefore earnestly to be hoped you will find no reason for recommending the Hong-Kong Government to decline this visa, and I venture to request you to consider this as a case for special consideration.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your obedient Servant
